The Monarch Drinks With Sean Nelson
Saturday, August 31, 2013 12:11 — 1 Comment
Sean Nelson bursts through the door with a firm handshake, an introduction, an apology for being late, and a copy of Charlie Smith’s new novel, Men in Miami Hotels, uncracked. His little mop of piled-up salt-and-pepper curls have been described before, as have his clear-framed Ray-Ban-esque prescriptions specs, but the thing that struck me most about him was his really excellent shirt. It was the shirt of a man of some distinction; very thick, striped white and light blue. He wrapped it in a black blazer with nautical-looking bronze buttons at the cuff.Â

One Super-Important Question For Vox Mod
Friday, August 30, 2013 11:18 — 0 Comments
Vox Mod is a Seattle producer. He has worked with cats like Erik Blood and has put out more than a handful of albums in the last half-dozen years, including his most recent LP release, SYN-ÆSTHETIC. His music is often energetic and always full of thought. The movements and undercurrents of his production have roots that go deep, creating a tenuous balance of sounds that he somehow keeps going track after track. The Monarch had a chance to catch up with Vox Mod and ask him one super-important question.Â
Hanging with The Comettes – Andrew Harris

The Comettes are like human marijuana. I’ve been sitting with the band, comprised of Tim Sunshine, Jettie Wilce, and Sager Small, for about 9 seconds and we’re already laughing and giving each other shit like old friends. There’s an energy amongst these three that is absolutely inspiring, resulting in a quick interview turning into myself and The Comettes sitting around Cafe Petirosso like high school buddies.
One Super-Important Question For Kithkin

Kithkin is playing Bumbershoot Sunday at 11:45AM. Known for their woodsy-themed performances and wild, energetic stage presence, Kithkin has been wowing audiences of late. Our Andrew Harris decided it was high time to ask them one super-important question…Â
Kate Lebo’s A Commonplace Book of Pie
Wednesday, August 28, 2013 12:31 — 0 Comments
My father’s favorite pie was Pecan. And so when I read Kate Lebo’s description of what a pecan pie lover is like, it was as if I was reading his astrological sign. “Pecan pie-lovers manage their fear of the future by playing as hard as they work. They distract themselves from the deadlines of birthdays with the sweetest of sweet pies, honey upon brown sugar, molasses upon fat. A pecan pie-lover prepares for the worst with dessert, and does not share.†Funny, true, with a pinch of darkness.
Collage With Serrah Russell

Serrah Russell is a Seattle artist (some of her images below). She focuses on collage work, and has created some of the most breathtaking examples of this medium The Monarch has seen. They stop you in your tracks. She was also one of the first visual artists we had the pleasure of publishing. Now, quite busy, she took some time to chat with us about new projects, her inspirations and why she watches old school sit-coms while hard at work!Â
Star Anna’s “Go To Hell”
Tuesday, August 27, 2013 12:06 — 0 Comments
I remember hearing about Star Anna not long after I moved to Seattle some five years ago. We ran in similar circles, but had never actually hung out. We still haven’t, really, though we’ve played gigs together in the same clubs on the same nights. In fact, I watched her one night, maybe six months ago, at the Tractor Tavern, sitting in a chair, hair wild, her faithful dog by her feet. She might as well have had a cigarette in her mouth, as she sang, belting lyrics along with a hard-strummed acoustic. Hundreds of people in the audience. This […]
Two Poems – Adam Boehmer

Three White Hairs in a Small Black Box
What am I?
Bioluminescent eye
That sees by the shine
Of its own light. Lies
Blind me. I am the seventh human sense
And my stepchild,
Consequence;
Scientists can't find me.
Januswise I make us men;
Glamour
Was my image then—
Remind me:
The awful fall up off all fours
From the forest
To the hours…
Tick, Tock: Divine me.
