2013 — The Monarch Review — Page 5
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis World Tour vol. 6 – Andrew Joslyn
Wednesday, October 30, 2013 17:33 — 0 Comments
I woke up at 2:10 pm Central time. The sun was shining bright as I walked out of the dark tour bus – and it was so bright that the surrounding landscape was blurred as my eyes adjusted to the intense light change. Sleep was still crusted in my eyes as I slowly emerged into downtown Des Moines, Iowa. Welcome to the American Heartland. At the time all I saw was a parking lot, a collection of tour buses, a huge sign for the Wells Fargo Arena – which was all familiar to a degree… but also very disjointing. Just […]
Ayron Jones

Ayron Jones is a crazy-good guitar player. Recently he and his band teamed up with Anthony Ray – better known as Sir-Mix-A-Lot – to put out the band’s first full-length. The Monarch had a chance to catch up with Ayron and talk about the process of putting together this new highly-anticipated record.Â
The Monarch Drinks With Kshama Sawant
Tuesday, October 29, 2013 15:15 — 5 Comments
For many Seattleites, the red signs that have sprouted up across the city, heralding a name that many have trouble pronouncing are a source of progressive pride. Kshama Sawant is running for a seat on the Seattle City Council as a member of the Socialist Alternative, and her campaign poses a credible threat to the city’s Democratic establishment.Â
The Comettes at Half-Neumos

While it’s actually just regular Neumos with a skeleton crew (remember this detail, it’ll come up later), and an added floor-to-ceiling curtain, Half-Neumos is a land of intrigue and dreams. There are a couple tables with stools in the back upon which candles flicker, and the normally oversized Neumos feels more like a small jazz club than the legendary rock venue that it is. I discovered all of this the moment I stepped into darkness, with absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into.Â

Cannabis Connoisseur

This is Cannabis Connoisseur Michael Zabrek with the latest update in all things marijuana! First, though, a bit about me: I moved to Seattle in 2011 after earning a BA from the University of South Florida. I came here to integrate myself in the vibrant music scene and progressive attitude of Seattle. I work at a cannabis analysis lab by day and play music at night. I play keyboards with Mr. Slapface, Black Zabrek, The Bayous, and Miles the Cat. I also smoke pot.Â
Open-Source Living – Jessie Sawyers
Tuesday, October 22, 2013 12:35 — 0 Comments
Hey, there. My name is Jessie Sawyers. I’m a visual musician (aka, tap dancer) based out of Seattle. I’m currently enjoying a 10-month residency with Tapestry Dance Company in Austin, TX. That said, Seattle is very much my home. There’s a palpable energy in our town’s music scene and I am proud to be a part of it and to have met and collaborated with such lovely, talented, and visionary human beings during my involvement and growth in the past 6 years. So far, I’ve been in Austin for one month and, while I do miss home, I am excited […]

Rose Poem – Jeff Bender

If anyone wants to win a World Series you know where to find me
What am I?
Bioluminescent eye
That sees by the shine
Of its own light. Lies
Blind me. I am the seventh human sense
And my stepchild,
Consequence;
Scientists can't find me.
Januswise I make us men;
Glamour
Was my image then—
Remind me:
The awful fall up off all fours
From the forest
To the hours…
Tick, Tock: Divine me.
