Macklemore & Ryan Lewis World Tour vol. 5 – Andrew Joslyn
Tuesday, October 15, 2013 12:33 — 0 Comments
I write this diary from the comfort of my parents’ house on Bainbridge Island, WA, after returning on a 14-hour flight from Milan to London, back to Seattle. The last week of the European leg of the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis World Tour has become a jumbled mess of images, smells, and memories, which I’m still trying hard to process. From Oslo, to Stockholm, to Amsterdam, to Paris, to Milan… we literally cut down the length of the European continent. The whole tour was 25 shows, 200,000 fans and 12 countries. What’s even harder to process is that my life a […]
Park Place

In the world of art, I, once in a while, come across a line or idea that I wish I had thought of first. Well, many years before I had the chance, Walt Whitman came up with the line, “I contain multitudes!” With this theory in mind, I present to you, “Park Place”, a video shot and edited by Robb Benson, featuring Ksusha Ovchinnikova, Tiffany Pruitt, Sean De Tore, Annie Price, Robb Benson, Darla Rae Barry Benson and myself. We are all wearing wigs and doing our best to be strange in a friendly way – all while drinking a particular brand […]
Stop Biting
Monday, October 14, 2013 13:01 — 0 Comments
The regular Stop Biting hip-hop night happens once a week at Lo-Fi on Eastlake. It is Seattle’s longest running hip-hop night. We had a chance to chat with one of the main men involved in SB, DJ absoluteMadman, to get his perspective on the evening.Â
One Super Important Question For Andrew Seamonster
Monday, October 14, 2013 12:54 — 0 Comments
The Seamonster Lounge in Wallingford is one of the best kept secrets in Seattle. Well, actually, not anymore. The place is super full on Tuesday and Friday nights and word is getting out more and more about it’s no cover and wonderful live music. There is word that the place is going to expand now, taking over the bakery next door, knocking down the westward wall, and growing the place. We had the chance to ask Andrew, the Seamonster’s owner, what the plans are for the future with this one super important question.
Polyrhythmics’ Libra Stripes

I can only imagine what it’s going to be like November 2nd at The Crocodile Café when the Polyrhythmics release their new record, Libra Stripes. So much dancing – the corner of 2nd and Blanchard might register on the Richter.
A Frank Interview With Crystal Beth Fleenor
Thursday, October 10, 2013 12:07 — 0 Comments
Beth Fleenor is one of the many gems in Seattle. From her management group, The Frank Agency, to her band, Crystal Beth, Fleenor is focused on artistic expression and beautiful human connection. The Monarch had a chance to chat with Fleenor about her work, her music, her fears and her joys.Â
Fin Records
Wednesday, October 9, 2013 13:47 — 0 Comments
Seattle’s Fin Records is the home for groups like The Young Evils, Red Jacket Mine and Stag. It’s policy is to work closely with artists but not to create any lengthy, binding contracts. If the artist can get a better deal from another label down the line, then so be it. Everyone wins. The Monarch had a chance to chat with Christian Fulghum, founder of Fin Records, about the genesis of the label, growing into being a home for hip-hop artists like J Pinder and more.Â
Alive at the Center!

One afternoon, I was in the Eagle Harbor bookstore on Bainbridge Island. I’d just been to a little wine shop for a tasting up the street. I was on my way to Hitchcock, a new Northwest-inspired restaurant, with my lovely girlfriend and kind mother, who was visiting from the Boston area. We stopped in the bookstore because it looked cute and what else are you supposed to do on Bainbridge Island right before lunch?Â
The Monarch Drinks With Safeco
Monday, October 7, 2013 11:49 — 0 Comments
Desperate for shelter and disheveled by a cruel battery of autumn winds, the truth about baseball in Seattle was never clearer to me than when I was on my way to Safeco Field on the last Saturday of September 2013 – it’s a struggle. On the field, you know who the Seattle Mariners are? They’re a chronic complainer of a friend who, deep down, you know you hang out with because you pity them.
People Who’ve Done Real Things vol. 2 – Steve Cox
Wednesday, October 2, 2013 20:04 — 0 Comments
Steve Cox drives an old, beat-up pick-up. He plays Scrabble and has a dog named Stella. Steve also lives in The Monarch Apartments – well, now he splits his time between the apartments and a new property in need of major work and fixing up. We decided to catch up with Steve and chat about the process of building a home on a new piece of land. This our second installment of People Who Do Real Things (vol. 1 here).Â
