Friday, September 13, 2013 11:29 — 0 Comments
Benjamin Doerr is a Seattle musician. He is the frontman for the band St. Paul de Vence, which just recently played Bumbershoot. Benjamin was asked a few years ago by his grandfather, a veteran of WWII, to put his stories into song. We asked him what this process was like.Â
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis World Tour vol. 1 – Andrew Joslyn
Thursday, September 12, 2013 11:29 — 0 Comments
I arrived in London for the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis world tour on September 8, a couple days ago in a flurry of flights, passports, work permits, and English cabbies. Â Adapting to the new time zone, after traveling through 7 time zones, has been the hardest adjustment. Â This is the beginning of the team’s first Arena world tour, and there are a lot of expectations and logistics to sort through.

One Super-Important Question For Evan Flory-Barnes
Tuesday, September 10, 2013 11:14 — 3 Comments
Evan Flory-Barnes is a Seattle musician. When he walks into a club, say, The Seamonster Lounge, he is greeted by dozens of people, often being affectionately called “The Mayor”. He plays double bass in jazz groups, hip-hop groups, rock groups. He has a charming smile and cares deeply about the city of Seattle, where he was born and raised. The Monarch Review had a chance to catch up with Evan and ask him one super-important question. Jake Uitti: What do you think Seattle needs to recognize as it begins a new era of influencing the arts on a world […]
Macklemore’s White Walls Video
Monday, September 9, 2013 14:58 — 1 Comment
I was at the shoot for the new Macklemore video “White Walls†waiting in the crowd to see what was going to happen. I was less interested, admittedly, in the music (though I like some of Macklemore’s songs) than I was in the stunning fact that the mere rumor (later confirmed) of the shoot brought thousands of people to a shut down Broadway Avenue in Capitol Hill. I stood with my girlfriend, looking around, watching the litter (soda cans, etc.) accumulate on the street, astonished at the some 5,000 audience members. At some point a Cadillac appeared and people rushed […]
Three For Shelby Earl
Wednesday, September 4, 2013 10:34 — 0 Comments
Seattle songwriter Shelby Earl recently released a new album, Swift Arrows. It is a beautiful, dramatic album she put together with the help of Seattle folk hero Damien Jurado. Shelby’s voice echoes and cascades, her lyrics poke and skip away. It really is a fine record. Shelby took the time to answer a few questions for The Monarch Review and, as a preface, we thought we’d offer her video here for the title track from her new album (live at the Fretboard Journal):
Bumbershoot Day 3

Hello and welcome back to our coverage of Bumbershoot. If you missed Day 1 click here, or Day 2 click here. Enjoy! (also check us out on Twitter here!) Cascadia ’10 I had no idea what to expect when I set off to check out Cascadia ’10 at the Tunein Stage. When I got done shooting and had a chance to listen, I was instantly impressed. It had a soul flavor, a very “Isaac Hayes†sense of funk, but with the Afrobeat feel upon which they hang they’re collective hats. These guys swing, and I instantly fell for them. The […]
Bumbershoot Day 2
Monday, September 2, 2013 8:40 — 0 Comments
Hello and welcome back to our coverage of Seattle’s Bumbershoot music and arts festival. If you missed Day 1, check it out here! And without further ado… Kithkin The four lost boys of Kithkin appear to have washed up randomly on the same island and began banging on things. Mistakenly announced as the “Canadian Youth Tribe,†the quartet of forest creatures announced the start of Day 2 with a motherfucking crash. A thunderous, name-making performance by these guys has been long overdue, and they picked a great moment to follow through, opening the second day of Bumbershoot with a sun-drenched […]
Bumbershoot Day 1
Sunday, September 1, 2013 12:21 — 0 Comments
Hello and welcome to our coverage of Seattle’s Bumbershoot music and arts festival! This is Day 1, featuring acts like Nacho Picasso, Heart and more! Flavr Blue I almost I missed Flavr Blue (curse you Bumbershoot press line!) but what I did see I definitely enjoyed. Traditionally a 3-piece (they were 4-piece today), Flavr Blue makes inspiring music. Complex harmonies over a laid back groove creating a very “sunshine†feel to their set. This is a digital band, so if electronic drums are a problem for you, I get it, but it’s done with such skill by this group […]
