Pacific Aggression with Shaun Scott

Shaun Scott is a Seattle-based director and writer. I got a chance to see him work, arranging the lighting, the sound, the camera angles, for his new film Pacific Aggression at Grand Illusions Cinema in July. Scott is an avid sports fan and walks about town as one of the most dapper fellows in the city. He is tall, articulate and open to conversations about art, music and libations. His new film focuses on two people separated by a continent though who find themselves meandering closer to each other by the day. The Monarch Review had a chance to chat […]
The City Impounded The Red Ford Pinto – James Brantingham

Bud’s 1980 paint-peeling Ford Pinto–named Diablo after The Cisco Kid’s horse—gently slowed to a stop on the south side of the Ship Canal. Bud pushed Diablo off the street onto a grassy patch. The Pinto held everything that Bud owned—hundreds of empty plastic bags, stacks of newspapers and his collection of unwashed socks. Bud was out of places to go. Right there on a grassy shoulder was the place called “The End of the Road†and with it a state of mind John Barth called, “cosmopsis”.

The Meltdown!
Wednesday, August 14, 2013 12:08 — 0 Comments
The Meltdown Festival happens once a year in Darrington, Washington. It’s an event where people celebrate music, showering in public, tie-die, street food and each other. There’s camping, hippie beads and some of the best bands from Seattle and the northwest. Below are some pictures taken by Olimpia Flis from this year’s Meltdown that we hope you enjoy!
Macklemore At The ACT Theater

Growing up in Seattle, Ben Haggerty wasn’t a fan of school. There was one class, however: a visual arts class with a teacher who, one day, offered an assignment. She had a super hero character still in its box. It had a cape, was dressed up, the whole nine yards. But the hero had no emblem. The assignment: create a moniker for this hero. Ben had always been a good artist and so he came up with his answer: Professor Macklemore. Ironically, in high school, the rapper would go to thrift stores and buy the most outlandish outfits – golfers […]

Pickathon is one of the beautiful summer festivals in the northwest. The event is held at Pendarvis Farm just outside of Portland and their innovative techniques – from eliminating plastic use to ensuring manageable crowds – is an example for all summer musical events. Below is a quick taste of the beauty of the weekend, we hope you enjoy!
Her Swim – Robb Benson

We lived on rural property, with rolling fields and a bit of forest
What am I?
Bioluminescent eye
That sees by the shine
Of its own light. Lies
Blind me. I am the seventh human sense
And my stepchild,
Consequence;
Scientists can't find me.
Januswise I make us men;
Glamour
Was my image then—
Remind me:
The awful fall up off all fours
From the forest
To the hours…
Tick, Tock: Divine me.
