This time we’re featuring work by Tangerine, Mary Lambert and Friends and Family Band. Work that will move you, work that swells, work that inspires.Â
Good ‘Oogs – Rich Smith

A healthy crowd of people (maybe 50? 60?) gave up a few hours of good August twilight and crammled down the stairs into Elliott Bay’s underground book-cathedral reading room. They were an interesting bunch, diverse in age if not in hair color—lots of blonds. They were young, old, in-between; they were established in the lit scene, brand new, or professed to not know what the hell I meant by “lit scene;” they were locals and they were out-of-towners. I got a sort of fuzzy sense that the majority of the attendees might actually have just been readers and not writers […]
The Vast Inside – Suzanne Farrell Smith
Monday, August 5, 2013 15:50 — 2 Comments
At the heart of Southern Africa, in the northwest region of Botswana, on a long thin island surrounded by vast flood plains, inside a thatch-and-canvas tent-like room built on a wooden deck fifteen feet above vegetation and animal habitat, I sit on a plush white bed surrounded by sheer cotton mosquito netting, staring at the locked glass door, cursing my husband.
Music And Touring With Robb Benson

Robb Benson has been a staple in the Seattle music community for 20 years – he has recorded and released 17 albums, played hundreds of shows, worked with world-famous artists – from Death Cab for Cutie to John Roderick to Alice in Chains – and now he is embarking on his first tour, hitting venues in L.A., Oakland, Portland and Eugene with friend and guitarist Rock Tim DiJulio. The Monarch Review had a chance to chitchat with Robb, here’s what we came up with:Â
Oliver Mtukudzi in Seattle – Kristen Gill

Sometimes you come across a musician that changes your perspective on life. Oliver Mtukudzi is one of those performers for me. Simply known as “Tuku†to his fans, he created what is known as “Tuku musicâ€, a blend of Southern African traditions, including mbira, mbaqanga, jit, and the traditional drumming styles of the Korekore. Mtukudzi turns 61 this year, and he was in concert at Dimitrious’ Jazz Alley supporting his 61st album.

SURVIVAL OF A BREADWINNER – Matthew Kelsey

The last time I flew over the Midwest, a number of states
What am I?
Bioluminescent eye
That sees by the shine
Of its own light. Lies
Blind me. I am the seventh human sense
And my stepchild,
Consequence;
Scientists can't find me.
Januswise I make us men;
Glamour
Was my image then—
Remind me:
The awful fall up off all fours
From the forest
To the hours…
Tick, Tock: Divine me.
