Eli Rosenblatt, a man the Monarch chatted with here for his Timber! performance, will soon be releasing a new album for kids and families called, Elephant Car. The 7-track record features playful lyrics and fun stories atop world music – from samba to klezmer. The record features performances by some of Seattle’s best musicians, ‘ta boot – from drummer Sam Esecson (Polyrhythmics) to trumpeter Ahamefule J. Oluo (Industrial Revelation). “The album is an unabashed, joyful celebration of rhythm, absurdity and love for humanity,” says Rosenblatt, “I hope it inspires people of all ages to absorb themselves in the music with […]

Hello! Below are three things happening in the town’s music scene that you might not be aware of. The point of this piece is brevity, so let’s jump right in! ***The 3rd Annual Pacific Northwest Songwriter’s Summit is Saturday from 1-9pm at the EMP and features a laundry list of stars talking about the craft. For example: a songwriting Panel featuring Tomo Nakayama, Shaprece, and Hey Marseilles with Jonathan Zwickel; a performance/interview with Marco Collins featuring the Grizzled Mighty; a recording Panel featuring Erik Blood, Jack Endino and Jeff Mcilwain with Jonathan Cunningham; another performance/interview with Marco Collins featuring Brandi Carlile; and a keynote presentation […]
Triple Threat at the Triple Door!
Wednesday, April 1, 2015 10:38 — 1 Comment
There’s a new variety show in town and it’s happening this Friday at the Triple Door. The lineup is impeccable, featuring writer Dan Savage, the fabulous Mama Tits and Monarch favorite Prom Queen, among others. Says the organizer behind the whole thing, Kimball Allen, “I love the concept of bringing a high-energy, high-class show to a premier venue such as The Triple Door. This town (greater Seattle) is bursting with talent, but I feel that we are failing when it comes to providing professional forums/opportunities for all (emerging and established talent) to be showcased.†Indeed, the city booms with talent, which […]
James Franco Review and APRIL

“What’s in a name? that which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet.†– Bill Shakespeare Indeed, what is in a name? For the folks at the James Franco Review, who are hosting their first release party tonight at the Hugo House, a name both matters and doesn’t at all. The review, founded by Corinne Manning, reads submissions blind – well, sort of. They read their submissions in fiction and poetry as if all the submitters have the same name. Which name? You guessed it! James Franco. Franco has received lots of attention […]

Jared Cortese is putting together the dopest party at SXSW, hosting a Seattle showcase – the only one of its kind this year at the giant music festival – at The Local Pub & Patio in Austin on March 21st. We had a chance to talk to Jared about the production, the bands, and his hopes for this soon-to-be-recurring showcase.Â
A Few Questions Re: Gigs4U

Okay, full disclosure: I have NO IDEA if this service will be helpful, but it seemed interesting and I thought it better to engage than to ignore. Ed Beeson gave some of his time to answer a few questions about Gigs4U, an online service meant to connect musicians with venues, and this is what we talked about. What is the overall aim for the app? What is it going to take over the course of the next 12 months for it to be as successful as you’d like it to be? Our overall aim is to provide a link between […]
THE CAP-SAC!!!!!
Monday, March 2, 2015 11:55 — 1 Comment
When I have the winter doldrums, I’m like many people: I like a free gift! And when I’m looking for a free gift, I often find myself wandering with some friends over to Central Cinema for Moviecat Trivia, a monthly game created and hosted by Jess Aceti and Brian Kirk. The treasures given out to winners range from old VHS horror movies to bowling trophies, but often they give away something COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY AMAZING. What is it, you ask? Let me answer your question with a question: What do you get when you combine a cap and a sac? […]
Yoko Feinman
Monday, February 16, 2015 13:24 — 0 Comments
Yoko Feinman (perhaps the best name in all of art) has a warm, loving and cute aesthetic that can melt a frozen heart or stoke an already warm one. She is blessed with a keen sense of curiosity and a bubbly personality on the page. I am happy here to display some of Yoko’s new pieces and to chat with her about her inspirations, how she works and what’s next for the D.C.ian turned Canadian. Jake Uitti: You sit down, pencils and water colors and paper in front of you. You look at the blank page. What are your first […]
Kristen Rau One Night Only!
Friday, February 13, 2015 13:28 — 1 Comment
The improvisor Kristen Rau will be playing tonight at Unexpected Productions at 10pm. Traveling all the way from Chicago, Ill-A-Noise, this international woman of mystery will be gliding over the dimly-lit stage performing film noir prompts, crying baby prompts, smoking mom prompts and, inevitably, pretending she’s a flamingo fishing spawning trout from the stream after a shrimp cocktail appetizer. In other words, KRISTEN IS A BADASS IMPROVISOR AND CHECK HER OUT TONIGHT! Here is but a small sample of her work you can indulge in:
Superbands

The Seattle Seahawks are a star-studded football team on the verge of back-to-back championships (fingers crossed, knock on wood!!). The city’s music scene, both past and present, is also full of recognizable faces and all-stars at their craft. So, we thought we’d have a little fun as we approach the big game to try and figure out who, among our most well known sonic stars, would play the most important positions on the gridiron during the Superbowl on Feb. 2nd (if such fantasies were to be made real). Here goes!
The answer isn't poetry, but rather language
