Yoko Feinman

Yoko Feinman (perhaps the best name in all of art) has a warm, loving and cute aesthetic that can melt a frozen heart or stoke an already warm one. She is blessed with a keen sense of curiosity and a bubbly personality on the page. I am happy here to display some of Yoko’s new pieces and to chat with her about her inspirations, how she works and what’s next for the D.C.ian turned Canadian. Jake Uitti: You sit down, pencils and water colors and paper in front of you. You look at the blank page. What are your first […]
Kristen Rau One Night Only!
Friday, February 13, 2015 13:28 — 1 Comment
The improvisor Kristen Rau will be playing tonight at Unexpected Productions at 10pm. Traveling all the way from Chicago, Ill-A-Noise, this international woman of mystery will be gliding over the dimly-lit stage performing film noir prompts, crying baby prompts, smoking mom prompts and, inevitably, pretending she’s a flamingo fishing spawning trout from the stream after a shrimp cocktail appetizer. In other words, KRISTEN IS A BADASS IMPROVISOR AND CHECK HER OUT TONIGHT! Here is but a small sample of her work you can indulge in:

Old age is flesh close to the bone, the shrunk spine, bruises spidering and eyes cupped by purple crescents. A flight of bees swarm deep in the chest, dark, disturbed, restless— but what? The tongue cannot filter words out of the buzzing and begins to braid itself.

Replacing Jon Stewart
Wednesday, February 11, 2015 12:23 — 0 Comments
It’s been a tough week. Before we’d even made it Tuesday afternoon we found out we’d have to find replacements for both Brian Williams and Spiderman. But neither of these revelations hit as hard as the news that we’d also have to replace Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show. After all, Spiderman is a fictitious character, and as it turns out, so is Brian Williams. Replacing them won’t be difficult. Stewart, on the other hand, is a person whose perspective we’ve come to depend on through three presidencies, a handful of wars, national tragedies and international triumphs. For […]
Spek Done It Again
Tuesday, February 10, 2015 11:54 — 0 Comments
On a Tuesday night last year I saw Matt “Spek†Watson post his “Bout That Action†remix, which featured the peer pressuring Deion Sanders and the now infamous Marshawn Lynch line, “I’m just ‘bout that action, boss.†The song ended up – quickly – going viral, getting played more than a quarter-million times in two weeks. It was also featured at the Seahawks Victory Parade for Superbowl 48. A year later, on a similar Tuesday night, right after Superbowl Media Day, Spek put out his follow up, a remix track featuring Lynch’s line, “I’m just here so I won’t get […]
Mutant Taxonomy: An Interview With The Fabulous Downey Brothers – Poster Bot
Wednesday, February 4, 2015 11:15 — 0 Comments
West Seattle is a No-Go Zone… isolated from the rest of the city, it’s natives endured a parallel evolution. West Seattleites are weird and make a fitting audience for the weirdest band in the world: The Fabulous Downey Brothers, a subgenus of the human species, unparalleled even against the characters of a Kurt Vonnegut novel. Delving into the dangers of Social Darwinism, I’m pleased to present Monarch readers with a Fabulous Downey interview, obtained at great personal risk during their show at The Benbow Room, a pirate themed restaurant/bar in the mutant haven of West Seattle’s Admiral District.Â

I can hear the white pills crushing. Then it sounds like someone else is inhaling, but I’m the only one here, sitting in my dorm room, listening to Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto. There is a rush of wind and the floor drops from below my feet, taking the chair with it. I’m flying through the air, trying to figure out what happened to the dorm and the Earth and the light. I seem to be falling, or maybe rising. I can’t be floating – the wind is blowing my hair in all different directions.

Superbands

The Seattle Seahawks are a star-studded football team on the verge of back-to-back championships (fingers crossed, knock on wood!!). The city’s music scene, both past and present, is also full of recognizable faces and all-stars at their craft. So, we thought we’d have a little fun as we approach the big game to try and figure out who, among our most well known sonic stars, would play the most important positions on the gridiron during the Superbowl on Feb. 2nd (if such fantasies were to be made real). Here goes!
The answer isn't poetry, but rather language
